Green Cleaning for Peterborough Buildings
Cleaning that takes the soil out of the building instead of moving it around.
What green cleaning means in practice
Green cleaning is not a single product you swap in. It is a decision about how the whole program runs: what goes on the surface, how the soil is collected, how much water and product get used, and what the building smells like when your staff arrive in the morning.
We clean occupied buildings across Peterborough and the Kawarthas, and the people in them are the reason this matters. Cleaning happens at night, but everyone breathes the results at nine the next morning.
Green For products
Our program uses the ServiceMaster Clean Green For product line, chosen so that the everyday chemistry in an occupied building is as gentle as the job allows while still cleaning properly.
Products are one part of it. The rest is control: correct dilution, the right product for the surface, and the discipline not to reach for something aggressive when a milder product and a bit of dwell time will do the same work. Where a job genuinely calls for a disinfectant, our commercial disinfection services use it deliberately rather than as a default spray.
The Capture and Removal cleaning system
Most cleaning that looks finished has simply relocated the soil: dusted off a desk and onto the floor, mopped across the tile with the same grey water, pushed along a corridor with a dry broom. The Capture and Removal cleaning system is built the other way round. Soil is captured and taken out of the building instead of being moved around inside it.
In a working building that looks like filtration vacuuming rather than sweeping, clean water and fresh microfibre rather than a tired bucket, and extraction on carpet so the soil leaves in the tank. It is the same principle behind our commercial carpet cleaning and the way our crews handle hard floors on the nightly janitorial program.
Working toward BOMA BEST or LEED
Two programs dominate sustainable building assessment in Canada. BOMA BEST is run by BOMA Canada, the national body for commercial building owners and property managers, while LEED is run here by the Canada Green Building Council. Both look at how a building is operated and maintained, not only at how it was built, and both award levels based on how much of their questionnaire a building can satisfy.
Cleaning sits inside that assessment. It shows up in indoor air quality, in how waste and recycling are handled, in water use, and in the chemicals stored and used on site. A custodial program that cannot document any of this makes the rest of the submission harder than it needs to be.
The focus areas cleaning touches
Neither program scores your cleaning company. They score your building, in areas like these.
BOMA BEST focus areas
- Custodial, which is the part our program lives in
- Air, including what gets sprayed indoors and what is stored on site
- Waste, and how much of it is diverted rather than binned
- Purchasing, which covers the products and consumables a building buys
- Health and wellness for the people using the space
- Water, down to how much of it a cleaning method needs
- Energy across building operations
- Comfort, Site, and Stakeholder Engagement
LEED focus areas
- Indoor environmental quality, the area cleaning affects most
- Materials and resources, including consumables and waste streams
- Water efficiency in day-to-day operations
- Sustainable sites and how the grounds are maintained
- Energy and atmosphere across the building
- Location and transportation
- Innovation in how the building is operated
How we help you earn points
We are not the certifying body, and no cleaning company can hand you a level. We do not hold either certification, and we will never tell you that hiring us awards you anything.
What we can do is run the custodial part of the program the way the assessment expects: green products in everyday use, a method that removes soil from the building, recycling and waste handled the way your building sorts it, consumables available from us at added cost, and a record of what was cleaned and inspected through your client portal. Whichever level your building is working toward, that is the part of the submission we can stand behind.
Tell us which program you are pursuing at the walkthrough and we will build the cleaning program with it in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does green cleaning clean as well as conventional cleaning?
The result comes from the method more than the label on the bottle. We pair the Green For product line with the Capture and Removal cleaning system, so soil leaves the building rather than being pushed from one surface to the next.
Is ServiceMaster Clean of Peterborough LEED certified or BOMA BEST certified?
No. Those programs certify buildings, not cleaning companies. What we can do is run the custodial side of your program so it supports the level you are working toward, and give you the records to show for it.
Can we switch our existing program over to green cleaning?
Yes. What gets cleaned stays the same, the products and the method change, and we walk the building first to check floor finishes and any surface that needs a specific product. Ask about it when you book a free walkthrough with us.
Does green cleaning cost more?
Price follows the building rather than the product line: cleanable square footage, condition, traffic, and frequency. The factors are set out on our page about how commercial cleaning pricing works.
